And don’t forget SJR 127! Because stripping women’s abortion rights from the Tennessee Constitution is always near the top of the Republican agenda. Never mind that with almost 10 percent unemployment in the state, families are hard-pressed to feed and clothe the children they already have. No! We want to make it even harder for women to choose a health care option they have a right to choose under the U.S. Constitution. Yes, restricting abortion rights is more important than jobs, folks! Because we must protect helpless fetuses from the women who carry them in their uteruses at all cost! *Rolls eyes*

Steve, thanks for posting on the subject.

I am not sure what specific language in the past proposed charter would have brought more “county” voters into the fold, without losing city voters.

IMO. It’s not worth the effort to: “clarify that the County Commission isn’t wholly and completely against the idea” in a resolution? The number of votes For or Against any resolution does just that. There’s more to this resolution than this. I guess we’ll see how this develops.

The mantra of “Consolidation or Bust”, wipes away any common ground, good will, or trust … and that’s what we have today.

Unless the law changes, “county” voters aren’t buying the selling of consolidation. The 85% says something.

I am still a big fan of yours, even when I might be wrong.

Kris,

What I mean by my comment is that outside of the regular trolls the conversation has largely been focused on the way forward rather than who should be blamed for the losses here in Tennessee.

I recognize that as the events of last Tuesday set in, it is highly likely that “blame storming”, or the casting of blame on others to deflect it from one’s self, may become the focus of the conversation. I hope this doesn’t happen & I’m not really interested in engaging in it.

We have a lot of work & evaluating to do as Democrats in this state. From my perspective we don’t have time to point fingers. It’s simply not constructive. Hopefully, all Tennessee Democrats, from the old schoolers to newbies like myself can come together & use our individual talents for the good of the party.

I’m actually encouraged. We cleaned house. We got rid of a lot of Blue Dogs that had no business wearing a “D” next to their name. Doug Jackson got slapped — hard. So much for sucking up to the NRA. Lincoln Davis got slapped — hard. Good. He deserved to lose.

There are some bright spots. Massachusetts was a clean sweep for the Democrats — and they voted to keep their tax increase. California voted overwhelmingly to lead the nation in climate change AND voted to move past partisan gridlock which had hamstrung their budget. Colorado voters overwhelmingly rejects a “fetal personhood” amendment by a 3-to-1 margin — for the SECOND time in 2 years. That should quash that issue for good.

We need some good candidates. Diane Black had a really well established name and identity, well before this election. Who the hell was Brett Carter? He was an unknown.

We’re at the bottom and that’s a good place to rebuild — on a new foundation. By all means the worst thing we can do is reshape the Democratic identity around Evan Bayh’s vision of “centrism.”

As usual, Krugman nailed it today:

So, we’re already getting the expected punditry: Obama needs to end his leftist policies, which consist of … well, there weren’t any, but he should stop them anyway.

What actually happened, of course, was that Obama failed to do enough to boost the economy, plus totally failing to tap into populist outrage at Wall Street. And now we’re in the trap I worried about from the beginning: by failing to do enough when he had political capital, he lost that capital, and now we’re stuck.

But he did have help in getting it wrong: at every stage there was a faction of Democrats standing in the way of strong action, demanding that Obama do less, avoid spending money, and so on. In so doing, they shot themselves in the face: half of the Blue Dogs lost their seats.

And what are those who are left demanding? Why, that Obama move to the center.

Closing schools may be necessary, but it is a knee jerk reaction without coordinating with neighborhood revitalization efforts that need schools to attract residents. Too often we accept trends as the predictor of the future. If we have low enrollment, why aren’t we asking the question: What would need to happen to get enrollment up to normal, particularly elementary (neighborhood) schools? Yes, a new Manassas and Douglas were not needed, political decisions at their worst. Our problem is an isolated school administration/board that doesn’t plan in concert with the rest of the City. The mayor should take over MCS.
