Beale Street Landing Funds Voted DOWN by Council Committee

Someone at Memphis Cobblestones is smiling broadly today, as the CA reports that a City Council committee voted AGAINST funding the RDC request to finish Beale Street Landing:

A City Council committee voted this morning against appropriating $10.5 million for the Riverfront Development Corp.’s Beale Street Landing project. The request for funds in the current Capital Improvement Program budget will now go to the full council in two weeks with a negative recommendation from the CIP committee.

Even if the $10.5 million city appropriation is approved, the RDC still needs another $6.6 million to finish the project as planned. But RDC chief Benny Lendermon, who described Tom Lee Park as the “worst riverfront park in the country,” said he is not requesting any additional money in the budget year that begins July 1, meaning city money to complete the project would not be available until July 1, 2011 at the earliest.

And so the eyesore becomes more of one for another year, eh?  Couldn’t they have left well enough alone?

There’s even more to the story. RDC knew about the budget shortfall back in February 2009. They deliberately kept City Council AND Mayor Lowery in the dark, yet went behind Lowery’s back and signed a contract $9.6 million contract for that unneeded boat dock.
