Coercion Sign Bill Passes

Yesterday the Tennessee State House passed HB 3301 a bill to require clinics that provide abortion services post signs warning that coercing someone to have an abortion is illegal.

From the article:

While any type of coercion to have an abortion is prohibited under current law, sponsors say some women may not know that and the sign simply spells out what’s in the law.

“It is already illegal to coerce someone to have an abortion, unfortunately a lot of women may not realize that and they are feeling that pressure,” Rep. Lynn has said.

The signs would read, in part, that “it is against the law for anyone, regardless of the person’s relationship to you, to coerce you into having or to force you to have an abortion.”

Sen. Beverly Marrero of Memphis, one of two senators who voted against the measure, called the legislation “intimidating.”

“Oh it’s a totally ludicrous, ridiculous bill that has everything to do with trying to intimidate people who are actually performing a legal procedure,” Marrero said. “They’re not trying to put up signs for people being forced to have vasectomies or other medical procedures. To the best of my knowledge, it is still the law of this land that you can legally have an abortion.”

This bill is ridiculous. Clinics that provide abortions already have safeguards in place to ensure that individuals are not being forced or coerced into having an abortion. In short, there is no real NEED for a law like this, except that the sponsors NEED to push a wedge issue to justify their existence.

The bill is on it’s way to the Governor.

Does the law require that the sign also spell out plainly that it is illegal to attempt to coerce or intimidate somebody into not having an abortion?
