I am constantly perplexed that issues of convenience regarding grown-ups have to even be discussed. I am a grown-up, or at least it says that on my driver’s license. I pay taxes. I am a law-abiding citizen. I take care of my dogs. I try to be a good person even when I want to be bad. (I say with a Heh.)
As a grown-up, I occasionally am treated like a child by lobbyists.
You may ask why I bring this up and it’s because I, and other registered voters, are basically treated if we were to go into a grocery store to purchase a nice Merlot, that apparently kittens will be assassinated, children will become ravenous zombies and my long-deceased grandmother will be waterboarded.
I don’t know why other than the sad and cheerless fact that lobbyists, and legislators, have not addressed the reality that it isn’t a big deal to be able to buy wine in the grocery store. We can buy a hopps and barley beverage in most convenience and food centers, but we can’t buy of the grape. It’s sort of preposterous. That’s why I return to the fact that as a grown up, I should be able to do this.
This isn’t just about me being a grown up, it’s also about grocery and conveniences stores being able to sell a legal product. Let’s be honest here, your local Kroger/Publix/Whole Foods isn’t going to be selling a Domaine Romanée-Conti, which apparently costs as much as a Corvette. I guess if they wanted to sell expensive, collectible wines for someone’s wine cellar, they should have the option but I foresee hopefully when this becomes a law, that most folks just will want inexpensive table wine to go with dinner.
No one loses in selling wine in the grocery store, despite the hoo-hah that you might hear. Responsible, grown-up people have a bit of vino with dinner is not going to be the beginning of the end of civilization. And anyone that tells you that is being deceptive.
Today is Red, White and Food Blog Day. If you want to have a voice on this issue, join the Red White and Food organization in making this a reality.
If you are tired of not being treated as a grown-up, I can only encourage each and everyone of you to blog about it. Let your voices be heard that this is not only convenient but good for the state of Tennessee as a whole.
We have the right to buy our bread and wine in the same place. It’s really a no-brainer.
