The Commercial Appeal reports on the Memphis/Shelby County Metro Charter Commission’s meeting with Former Indianapolis Mayor Stephen Goldsmith, and his experience integrating a Metro style government.
“What is exciting about what you are doing is that it is a chance to restructure government and provide the tools. Not, per se, a chance to consolidate government,” he said.
And that fit with the task perceived by commissioners like Carmen Sandoval — a restructuring and improving rather than full merger.
“It was the concept of rebuilding,” Sandoval said of Goldsmith’s points. “The word consolidation isn’t specific to what we’re doing. We’re looking at a better way to make what we do in Memphis and the surrounding area more effective.”
This is a pretty hot button issue here in Shelby County. We’ll have more coverage on the process in the coming weeks.
