Redistricting the Nation

With the 2010 Census underway, and state and federal election cycles just ramping up, political observers are starting to think about the redistricting process that will greatly impact who represents whom throughout the nation in the 2012 election.

Here in Tennessee, since the loss of a Democratic majority in the state legislature, Democrats have been talking about redistricting, and the need to regain a majority in one body of the legislature to have more of a voice in the process for over a year.

Enter Redistricting the Nation, a site that informs you about your elected representatives to federal, state, and in some cases, local elected officials as well as the redistricting process and even allows you to draw your own districts!

From the site:

Legislators have long used redistricting as an opportunity to select their constituents, rather than empowering voters to elect their representatives. The redistricting following the 2010 Census is an opportunity to change how the process is conducted. Armed with knowledge and the right tools, the public can redraw the map on redistricting.

Understanding the process is the first step in helping make it work better for all of us. Redistricting the Nation is a really neat tool to help those of us who may not be as engaged better understand the process to ensure we are represented fairly and equitably.

Very nice resource. I wonder why District 7 is so weirdly drawn? Can Marsha Blackburn just represent Spring Hill area and surround. What is this snaking up through Brentwood, west of Nashville, and up to Clarksville?

The 7th was drawn to be a sponge district, soaking up every excess Republican from the 5th, 6th, 8th and 9th Districts, all of which borders the 7th. It has worked so far, giving Democrats advantages in all of them, although the 6th is slipping away from them.
