Do You See Equity In These Appointments?
Tom Humphrey reports about appointments a “Criminal Justice Coordinating Committee”, appointed by Governor Bredesen.
I was looking at the appointments and noticed something interesting. 9 of the 13 appointees are from Middle TN. In fact, 7 are from Davidson County alone. Below is the breakdown:
West TN
· A C Wharton, Shelby County, representing a city or county mayor
· David Woolfork, Madison County, representing a county sheriff
East TN
· Ben Strand, Jefferson County, representing a juvenile court judge
· Ardena Garth, Hamilton County, representing a public defender
Middle TN
· Seth Norman, Davidson County, representing a criminal court judge
· Randy York, Putnam County, representing a district attorney general
· Ronal Serpas, Davidson County, representing a chief of police of an incorporated municipality
· David Delbridge, Davidson County, representing a criminal justice-related business executive officer
· Mark Lipsey, Davidson County, representing a college faculty member with criminal justice expertise
· Linda Leathers, Davidson County, representing a non-profit supplier of services to the criminal justice system
· Rev. George T. Brooks Sr., Davidson County, representing a faith-based organization
· Jody Folk, Davidson County, representing a victim’s rights organization
· Frank Sutherland, Williamson County, as a citizen of Tennessee
West Tennessee has about 2m people. East Tennessee has a around 2.25m. That leaves Middle Tennessee with around 2.5m, but Middle Tennessee gets over half the appointments?
And people wonder why folks in East and West Tennessee feel left out of the process.
Maybe Gordon Bonnyman was right this morning. Maybe there is something to “divide and conquer” in state politics.
